Govinda
Bright and cheery, on a corner of a little square behind the ramblas. This vegetarian restaurant is mostly Indian but also serves pizzas and salads as well.

Thali Govinda €20.00
Thali
As the restaurant’s special, this giant plate serves a sampling of many things from the menu. It was quite big, and definitely a good amount for 2 people, but I ordered it for myself! The crispy papadum on the top right corner was actually spicy, the first time I’ve ever had a spicy one. I wasn’t sure how to start eating, I just dipped the bread in the sauces and ate the rest with rice or by itself. From bottom left clockwise, starting with the small round cup to the left of the bigger one with the white cream inside:

1. Pickle- Some type of squash or soft vegetable in a very spicy sauce that tasted almost like rubbing alcohol.
2. Chutney- a mildly sweet plum jam sauce.
3. Raita- plain unflavored yogurt mixed with some nuts and cucumber.
4. Dhal- thick and chunky lentil soup the way they always serve it at Indian restaurants, lightly spiced.
5. Chawal- plain rice.
6. Sabji (Sapnam Curry Paneer)- Mushrooms, paneer (homemade cheese), and peas in a sweet creamy sauce. The cheese was really thick, dense, and spongy and tasted plain, but added a good meaty texture to the sauce.
7. Kofta- soft soggy vegetable balls resembling meat balls in really spicy spaghetti tomato sauce.
8. Pakora- like an Indian version of tempura. The batter was very thick and almost like a cake in texture and a bit crispy in some spots. The various insides were of soft fried eggplant, squash, green pepper, and a spicy green chili pepper.
9. Samosa- puffy buttery pastry shell surrounding soft potatoes and peas.
10. In the center, a sour mushy spinach with chickpeas and squash.
11. Chapati- flat chewy whole wheat pita like bread. I still like naan bread the best!
12. And finally, the big white creamy thing at the bottom, the dessert: Apple crumble with yogurt and saffron- extremely thick pasty sticky yogurt with a faint lemon flavor (fun to nibble on slowly!), on top of cooked sweetened apples and bits of hard seeds. I really liked this one a lot!

Chana Masala €8.30
chana masala
Mild spicy and very very salty. Because of the Thali Govinda above, we couldn’t finish this, but happily took it home and ate it as a snack with bread for a few days. The saltiness made it satisfying just to eat a few chickpeas at a time!

chawal €3.70
rice
Plain rice.

Everything here is pretty spicy, which made hungry Chicken very happy!
